A Documentary on Chakulia Panda by Prangya Paramita Pradhan

A Documentary on Chakulia Panda by Prangya Paramita Pradhan
Chakulia Panda (Odia: ଚକୁଳିଆ ପଣ୍ଡା), is not one person, it belongs to one sect who are living in Odisha. They used to walk around villages and recite some religious poems. They never beg from anyone, which people give them, they would accept that. Even they don't stop for anyone.

When I was a child, I used to see them passing by our home and we used to offer them some rice or something. And if you call them to stop, they didn't. Once I did that same mistake, I called one person to stop, but he didn't stop there. So ran to him to give some rice.

After that incident, I asked my parents why he didn't stop. Then they explained to me that they are Chakulia Panda and they are not the beggers to stop. They are representing our ancient culture, from Tretaya Yuga. According to some legends, they are from the family of Lord Parsuram and according to some legends Bhima, the strongest Pandav used to recite poems like this and accepts the things which people offer him.

They used to carry one handmade beautiful big umbrella which is made up of palm leaf called as Chhatri (Odia: ଛତ୍ରି), one bag to carry the things offered by people and one Kamandalu on their hand. They put marks of white sandalwood on their forehead and on their soldiers.

Their appearance is similar to the Bamana Abatara or Vamana Avatar from the 10 Avatars of Lord Bishnu. In Bamana Abatara, lord Bishnu defeated Asura Bali. So, they are representing some basic ancient legends.

But why today, I'm saying these things, why I'm sharing those pieces of information. Because nowadays, these people are not taking interest in this field. Why? They are not getting much respect for which they are known, not getting that amount of food to survive in this world. But some are doing this job, just to spread and share that old culture with this new world.

Today, I saw one video made by Prangya Paramita Pradhan, one storyteller, a filmmaker who used to share stories through the lens of a camera. She documented the whole story from one village, where Chakulia Panda are living.

In that documentary, she captured their life, the story behind their job, the poems they recite, their problems, etc. They are the most ignored sect nowadays. If this thing would go on, then the new generation couldn't see them, couldn't know about them.
I would thank her for making such a beautiful documentary for us, for the world, for the other people who don't know about them. And for those, who are staying outside Odisha and their children never got the chance to see them live.

Here is the YouTube link to the video. Must watch and Share with other.

Memory of My Life- 4: The photo captured by me Feature as Photo of the Week on Odia Wikipedia
In life, small things could give you many reasons for happiness. It was 12th April in 2016, when I got a ping from Sailesh Patnaik that a photo which I had captured was featuring as Photo of Week on Odia Wikipedia. So, I had checked the home page immediately and look at the picture, what I found.

The featured photo was about a person who was playing a musical instrument known as "Kendara" in Odisha. Some years before, a bunch of people came to Odisha and started living in a specific region. Since they were outsiders, they used to beg by playing this instrument and singing a special song which is known as "Gobinda Chandra Tika".

There is a story behind this "Gobinda Chandra Tika" since centuries. There was a prince named Gobinda Chandra, whose mother got to know that her son won't live longer. So, she decided to give him to the God so the God would take care of him. That's why she gave him a "Kendara" and taught him some song to sing and sent him to the Saint Hadippa.

Love for Odia Movies

Love for Odia Movies

I born and raised in a village where everyone speaks Odia only. Odia is the global language of that village. At that time, we only saw the Odia TV Channels which is provided to Doordarshan, Listen to Odia Radio only. That radio was the government station like Air Odisha. Till my 10th I had seen the Odia newspapers only.

I think everyone in our village love to watch Odia movies and the Yatra (Play). Though I raised within those people, I became that type. I love to watch Odia movie. Yes, now I don't like the Yatra, but there was a time when I love to watch Yatra. With the flow of time, my taste also changed and then I started watching Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali and English movies. But I don't give up my habit to watch Odia movies. All are complaining that the Odia movies don't have the original story. But, I don't see that. I only see the good things which might not be in the original movies. Even I had seen a story in 4 languages. Movies like Pokiri and Okkadu in Telugu had remade in some other languages and I had seen everything. The Pokiri movie remade in Tamil, Kannada and Hindi and I saw a number of variation within that. Okkadu remade in Odia, Tamil, Bengali as well as in Hindi. And in every language, there is a variation. If we are watching a movie a number of times, then why shouldn't we watch a single movie by various actors.

Yes, I love to watch Odia movie. It's true that I couldn't see a movie in a theatre. Because I don't have the patience to sit in a single place for 2 to 3 hours. That's why I depend on internet and TV to watch the movies.

Doubt in Love

Doubt in Love

According to some people and books, LOVE is the best feeling and relationship in this world. The love may be various types starting from family to some object. But, regularly, we consider the relationship between a boy and a girl as love. Numbers of writers, poets had written about love. The movies having love stories and the novels having love stories are loved by a huge audience.

Like KNOWLEDGE, Love is a special thing which increases by spreading. The attraction and love started from ancient time. It is here since the creation of the universe. But, sometimes it decreases within people. The main factor of the decrement is Doubt and Lies. If someone started to doubt another, then their love surely decreases and a time will come, when they both get separated from each other. The lies also increase the doubt.
